Facebook is perverted. Someone tells about the death of a friend and the message gets tons of "likes." FB has to come up with a more nuanced set of reactions. Sympathy, love and hate, Mr. Zuckerberg?
Yes, it's an odd thing to LIKE a death, but there are no other keystroke options, as you say. I deal with this issue by not clicking the like, and just making an appropriate comment.
I agree. It is strange to "Like" something unpleasant, such as an illness, death, or troubling event. I try to comment rather than "Like" such posts. However, I think "Likes" are a way of showing support when people don't know to say or just want to acknowledge the one who posted.
You're right. In conversation I would never use the word to describe my feelings about a loss. "Like" in the FB context reflects a disingenuous attempt to keep the chatter wholesome, and to distance the administrators from all the hideous commentary we modern mob are prone to vomiting up.
